BLACK FRIDAY DEAL 50 OFF
TAILOR-MADE ONLINE PROGRAMMES
''Working one to one has been a revelation! It means being able to stop and explore topics of particular interest and need. I progress at my own pace and review anything I'm having difficulty with.  The conversation sessions are much more productive because they are not limited by the language skills of fellow students. They are more comprehensive and varied and the trainer can correct my mistakes as I go. Plus lots more conversation - scary at first but has increased my confidence!"

Happy Ferragosto! A national holiday that dates back to the Romans
Nowadays Ferragosto is considered a national holiday synonymous with seaside in Italy, but its origins date back to ancient times.

Celebrated on 15 August, Ferragosto was first proclaimed by the Emperor Augustus in 18 BC. The feriae Augusti, or August rest, was first a month-long event that granted workers a time of rest after the main farming period. It was a time when the Romans feted the gods of agriculture and those associated with the change of seasons, and, unusually, nobility mixed with the labouring classes.

Eventually the Ferragosto holiday became a one-day celebration and Christians began to celebrate the 15 August for its religious significance as the assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Today, its a holiday for most people, everything is closed and there are celebrations everywhere often including music, parades, fireworks and fantastic feasts. Cities are deserted and the beaches are packed with people playing tricks on one another - make sure you watch out for the infamous gavettoni*!

*gavettoni - buckets of water thrown at people. Click on the title to watch this video on YouTube and find out more about them >

Learning a language: there are more benefits than you think!
Research findings from a recent study carried out by Edinburgh University and Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India, suggest that knowing a second language may delay dementia by up to five years this is more than powerful drugs. Incredibly, scientists indicated that being bilingual exercises the mind and that switching between different sounds, concepts and grammar structures trains the brain so it has greater reserves when disease takes hold. In light of this research, it seems that there really are more benefits to learning a language than you'd think. Not only is it a rewarding pastime that's good for the spirit but it's good for long term health too!
